Wal-Mart's Discrimination Difficulties

1. Walmart has been accused of violating the Title VII Civil Rights Act of 1964. Walmart denied black applicants the job of truck driver and offered the same job to applicants that were not minorities. Likewise, they refused women the opportunity to work in the warehouse, and gave fewer opportunities to women to become managers.

2. I think diversifying top-management ranks will be more of a challenge for Walmart than ending charges of discrimination. As one of the largest private employers in the United States, it would be effortless for Walmart to make discrimination charges go away by settling cases out of court without much publicity after the initial complaint. However, diversifying its top-management involves taking the time out to find more women that are suitable for the positions being offered. Also, there would have to be some type of seminar or workshop provided so to educate current top-management employees about diversity. This would show that Walmart supports equal opportunity employment by promoting an atmosphere in which women and minorities feel welcome, respected and able to perform at their best as top-management.

3. I do believe that more diversity among its executives would help Walmart avoid problems with discrimination. Actually, if it was to diversify its top-management, Walmart would gain a competitive advantage that could offer them a broader group of talent and better understanding of the desires and actions of their various customers.
