Effective Communication

Verbal communication is something that is taught in formal education system. Without formal communication then you would not be able to clearly make your points without there being some miscommunication. Verbal communications is the main way that police, people, and any other form of justice law is relayed. Also verbal communication include things like reading, email, writing, talking to people, and computer skills. Non- verbal communication is something that is expressed different usually with your body language. Some examples are hand movements, face expressions, voice, and smell. There are three primary components they are someone who creates communication, the communication, and the person who receives the communication.

Hearing is a simple step because when someone is talking you hear them. Listening goes a little more into hearing. This is when you actually know what the person is talking about. When it comes to school, law, or anything that is important you need to listen. If you just hear then normally you will be lost as to what is going on or what to do. Listening also mean to observe what you are hearing such as watch someone's behavior, the way they move, this helps you understand what you hear.

There are three types of formal communication. They are upward, downward, and horizontal formal communications. The formal communication are strict procedures. Downwards communication is when directors send information down the line and by the times it's down the line it will have reached the lowest level. Upwards communication is when the directors are provided information by the subordinates. Then the third for of formal communication is horizontal communication. This is when the department sit there with the same people that are on their level and discuss what has happen and determine whether or not there is anything else that will need to be done. Then you have informal communication. This is normally when you hear things through the grapevine. With this being done it can sometimes altar the information. The things that you hear through the grapevine are not always true. The ways that the police and fields such as police find out if someone is lien by polygraph test, eyes, and other communications that are out of the ordinary.

The different barriers to effective communication in criminal justice organizations

Emotional barriers are when people use their personal experiences and expectations when trying to communicate. Sometimes emotional barriers help and police officer to save someone from making bad choices. When someone is having some of the same emotion issues that convict maybe having then it is easier to talk them out of doing things that they may not want to do. Being unsure of their abilities and confidence when speaking or relaying messages. An example of an emotional barrier would be low self-esteem (Wallace & Roberson, 2009). A person with low or no self-esteem would most likely not speak or be unable to keep the flow of information flowing, making communication almost nonexistent.

Physical barriers is the most common communication barrier. Having radio or equipment failure can slow down or even stop the relay of important information or messages. Say if there's an ongoing search and there is a great distance or obstacles between officers in can impede the flow or relay of information. If an officer have radio dead spots or radio equipment failure then the officer will not be able to send or receive important messages. The equipment failure might cost the officer or other their life.
