Model of a Warden
The book on the model warden had a lot of helpful insights on how to run and manage and effective prison system. One of the best things I think the book did was mentioning a few wardens in the past, and explain how they used the proactive approach to manage. It is very important to know what steps you want to take as a warden or a leader in any situation. Frank Wood knew his approach and carefully realayed the message and this why he was effective. The style of management by wardens can have a huge effect on the standard of living, freedom of the individual needs of all inmates.
Frank Wood knew what style of management he could impose on his staff members. I think that he really knew how to relate his management to the size of the group he was trying to led, he knew that some type of authoritarian management had to be used to accomplish his goal of a humane and respectful prison. He was also good at using the effects or critics of his style, and this helped him run his organization more effectively.
When running an institution I think there are two things you really have to focus on and they are problems of size and training. In Stillwater violence was increasing and the dangers in the prison were becoming more complex, which made the jobs of staff more intense. So to ensure the best safety for staff and inmates I would adapt to change in the institution. A prison has to be able to do more than just survive, it needs to be able to get better. I think new technology is making this possible, because some of the ways in which things use to be ran are out dated and simply do not apply to institutions today. Teamwork and planning before hand is the key. I would teach my staff how to work together, because everybody needs to contribute their own knowledge and work together as a team. However the larger the group the more difficult it would be to achieve this.
Everybody knows that it is easier to give people an order than to combine their thoughts. However this results in making the institution less effective. The inability of managers to manage can result in more authoritarian management which in fact makes matters worse. One of the main problems facing management today is effective teamwork.
Training is also a good approach and can be given to make staff more effective and make organizations and teamwork more effective. Training also needs to be based on the knowledge we have. The need for staff to be trained is important, so we also need to consider what can go wrong and how it can get worse.
The difference between Norman Carlson and other leaders was his compassion rather than a mission focused mind. He knew what good leadership was about and then drew conclusions from examples. He did everything a great leader was suppose to do, and also told others how to be much more effective. He was not somebody people hated to deal with, which made it easier for him to supervisor, manager, and lead the institution. He made sure that jobs got done efficiently and well, which took care of future by planning.
He was also very active around the prison meaning he would catch people and talk to them. Showing up a lot is the key behavior of top leaders, and Carlson got benefits from it. He got to know his staff, because by being around them he found out who did what well and who needed attention when. By watching what they did he also found out what the real issues were. Great leaders are great communicators and they learn how by showing up a lot. That's where they learn what communication style is best. By showing up a lot great leaders get the opportunity to share their ideas about the direction and purpose of the organization.
Great leaders also think about the kinds of situations they might face by being proactive. They plan for them, and run through them in their mind. Carlson kept the future in mind, and remained aware of the future consequences of his decisions. He thought farther ahead than most of his peers. I think the advantage of planning is that it helps you recognize changing future situations. Great leaders pay attention to the future, because it's their job to choose the path for their organization. Without proactive thinking leaders are forced to rely on spare of the moment ideas to deal with new situations, and in today's institutions that doesn't work.
What does it mean to be a great leader?
Great leaders manage their groups so that it is best for staff to do what's in the organization's best interest. Great leaders spend a lot of time making sure that their people understand exactly what they expect and what the consequences of behavior are. They do this by spending time with individuals and groups, practicing active listening and repeating key points again and again. Great leaders understand the power of communication and use it to better their peers. They make sure they model the behavior they want. They practice leadership by example. They concentrate on the performance they want from staff and on the things they can control.
Great leaders also know how to critique their own leadership performance. You can't get better at something if you don't see it as difficult. Great leaders believe that leadership is the most important thing they do. They believe that it's something they'll get better at if they work at it. They pay attention to the things that are under their control and try to do them better. Some average leaders struggle with change and fail to be great leaders, because of communication. Great leaders spend their time communicating, and they are able to send their message. Effective leaders help others to understand the need for change.
You have to be truthful, and Leaders struggle with this problem. From a leadership point of view, you always want to move toward telling the hard truths and helping people cope with the realities of change. Great leadership does not mean running away from the truth, because the truth can sometimes inspire people to take action that will make the situation better. Effective leaders help others to understand the need for change.
Prisons in Iraq and Cuba
The military run prisons in Iraq were the cause of prisoner treatment, and the broadcast of images showing Iraqi prisoners being physically and sexually humiliated by U.S. soldiers was shown to Americans. U.S. troops have stopped putting hoods over the heads of prisoners, and interrogation tactics such as sleep deprivation or forcing people to sit or stand in uncomfortable positions were used. However U.S. national security apologized to the Arabs for the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by American troops. The U.S. said they were deeply sorry for what happened to the prisoners and regrets the humiliation caused to the detainees and their families. The abuse was called the abuse unacceptable and those responsible were supposed to be punished. The lack of humane and just staff resulted in the humiliation of or country. This is why it is important for a leader to be hands on and involved in all staff situations.
The smartest person may not be the best leaders. So it is important to know the difference between the ability to lead and the ability of a smart person. It's also important to determine whether a person is capable of learning leadership. The natural leader will stand out. If you show leadership outside of the job, you may have some leadership potential on the job. You need to ask the right questions, because a person who doesn't like challenge is not a potential leader. People worried about their status are not good leaders. Highly original people are often not good leaders because they are unable to judge their output, they need somebody else to say what will work. Brainstorming is not a particularly helpful practice in leadership, because ideas need to stay realistic. Not everybody with smart ideas is a leader, but leaders seem to be able to identify which ideas are smart and which aren't. No one can lead without being criticized or without facing discouragement. A potential leader needs a mental toughness. You need to be a tough minded leader who sees things as they are and will pay the price. You have to be able to show character and personality. It's important that staff respect you. They may like you but not follow you, however if they respect you they will follow you even if they don't like you. A quality that makes people listen to you, and when you speak people listen. Other people may talk a great deal, but nobody listens to them. They're making a speech they're not giving leadership.
If I were a Warden I would make education mandatory. Anyone who did more than six years would come out with either a college degree. I would do what ever it took to get ride of drugs and make sure those guards who did deal were locked up. I would restore human dignity, and offer counseling sessions for family to attend with the inmate. Easier access to anyone interested in self improvement programs whether it is college degree programs or learning a trade. If you don't care about situations then you can not make any change. So a leader has to have some ideas about change, and about how the future could be different. You have to think out of the box to have good visions and to come up with effective strategies that will help you reach your goal. An effective leader is a person with a passion for a cause that is larger than they are. Someone with a dream and a vision that will better the institution system. Without passion a leader will not make the difficult decisions and carry them into action. The leader without a passion for a cause will not improve situations.
