Killing Cancer

Audience- Cancer patients, families that have are dealing with cancer

Thesis- Not only is surviving cancer and huge defeat, but beating cancer and returning to the top of your sport to win the most prestigious race in the world six times in a row is a miracle. Lance Armstrong is one of the most recognizable athletes in the world not only from his athletic abilities but also the fact that he had battled testicular cancer. Lance is a hero and an inspiration to all those who are dealing with cancer issues.

I. As a young child was always very competitive. He won his first triathlon when he was thirteen and went on to become a professional at sixteen years old. Moved to Colorado and trained with the Olympic Cycling team and from there moved up the ranks and eventually was the US National Amateur Champion, soon after he turned pro. In 1996 was ranked the number one cyclist in the world.

II. In October later that year he was diagnosed with testicular cancer that had spread to his lungs and his brain. His chances of survival were less than 50-50. He began an aggressive treatment of chemotherapy that would give him the chance of a full recovery. The treatment started to work and slowly Lance allowed his thoughts to return to racing.

III. His recovery seemed miraculous but actually returning to racing felt unfathomable. The United States cycling team took a leap of faith and signed him. His comeback was rocky at the start of 1998 where he had to quit a race in Paris, France. Later he admitted that he wasn't ready to race again he was merely still learning how to live again. 1999 came with a specific goal; the Tour de France. He won his first race there but did not stop he added six more titles to his list and has been awarded virtually every sports honor there is, and has become a symbol of hope and inspiration.

IV. His affect on others around the world has been great. He has given hope to those diagnosed with cancer and not only hope to survive but hope to return to the same life they had before they were diagnosed. The Lance Armstrong Foundation has become among the most influential organizations of its kind today provides practical information and tools people need to battle cancer and live strong through education, advocacy, public health programs, and research grants.
