When Killing Becomes Okay
An elderly women grips on to her daughter's hands sending a prayer over her and her family as she draws in her last breath. For some people they may never get to hold their loved ones hands as they take their last breath, and sometimes that last breath is caused by a medicine that someone gives them. Medicine that is prescribed by a doctor just killed a loved one. This is happening, because of the government allowing states to legalized Doctor Assisted Suicide. It should not be legal to commit suicide, even if you are an elderly and ill.
On March 11, 2011, Washington state official's reported fifty-one people died due to ingesting the lethal dose. (Washington) Thoughts of suicide occur in not only young people, but old people as well. It is illegal in many states to help someone commit suicide, but in three states it is legalized. More states are trying to pass a law where Doctors can give medicine to ill patients to kill them. It is only a matter of time until three states become fifty.
Oregon passed a Death with Dignity Act on October 27 1997. (Oregon) In 2011 over 114 prescriptions were written, but only seventy-one deaths occurred. (Oregon) Since the law passed in 1997, over 935 people had Death with Dignity Act prescriptions written and 596 people had died from ingesting it. (Oregon) In 2011 no referral was made to the Oregon Medical Board for failure to comply with Death with Dignity Act requirements. (Oregon) Which, this means that they are okay with killing people. Many people believe abortion is wrong for killing an innocent child who does not have a say if they live or not. That is not any different that killing someone who is not in their right minds.
The American right-to-die movement began in the 1980s and 1990s with Derek Humphrey's book Final Exit. Many of people are against Assisted Suicide because of their religion and how they have been raised while others are for it, but helping someone end their life is murder. In Texas a man was charged with helping his wife commit suicide. (HARISH, ALON) Is that any different than a doctor giving his patients medicine to die? No, it is not. Over 600 people were killed in Oregon alone due to an act that was passed. The People of The United States need to take a stand so
