Technology
Technology drives business and it allows for the business to strive nowadays way above and beyond the companies of the past. Every day it seems that there is new technology on the forefront of business just calling out to make someone's job easier and more effective. With this technology however, comes more ways to manage the technology and makes the manager's job more involved and sometimes more intense. Technology at GE is the basis and forefront for most of its operations, and the technology increase in the world affects the business at GE because they strive to be the first to incorporate a new technology, or if not the first, try to make the first try at the technology better. This external factor of technology around GE makes the plans and focuses of the internal management to force the company to go leaps and bounds over the competition and stay competitive themselves. GE has recently made a forefront in technology by introducing the new electronic diode, which was stated as follows by Margaret Blohm from GE's advanced technology division, "Just as silicon transistors replaced old vacuum tube technology and enabled the electronic age, carbon nanotube devices could open a new era of electronics," (Careers at GE, 2007). This new development is more than just a new science or a new way to produce technology but as stated later in the same article, "We are excited about this breakthrough and we're eager to start developing new applications for the GE businesses" (Careers at GE, 2007). This statement lets us know that now this new technology that has been brought forth is going to impact all the business units at GE forcing them to change and reformat their plans and strategic outlooks for their business. Technology will always force business to change, sometimes in a good way and sometimes in a bad way, but it will always keep the focus and planning for upper and lower management changing and getting more involved.
