Ira's Credibility
Credibility is what we think the authenticity of ones actions represent. I think the character Ira, from the short story "Ira", is credible. Ira was new in school and he wanted to make friends but it wasn't like that, so during sharing time Ira decided to share something about him. Of course wanting to sound cool he lied and said believed w/ crazy animals, he later had to fess up before he was caught. Even though some kids may not tell the truth Ira is credible because I believe a child would lie to get attention or to be perceived as popular. Then he realizes later in the story he has change of heart. We have all lied to impress someone at least once.
Ira really wanted his classmates to like him so he thought if they thought Ira lived somewhere awesome, it would grant him popularity. It was sharing time and Ira was new and wanted people to like him so, Ira made up a lie. At first, it was a little lie about living with animals on the farm. He said "We have two ferrets and a boa constrictor-" "and a monkey!" and all of a sudden all his classmates started raising their hands to ask Ira questions. "Wow," Rodger said "can I come over to your house?"
I personally think a child would be too proud/embarrassed to tell everyone they made it all up. Ira made the lie even bigger. He told his classmates that his dad worked in advertising and sometimes makes TV commercials and that the lion cub (Ira nursed back to health) was in a commercial his dad produced. Everyone was impressed. The teacher however, did not believe Ira. She asked him if he was positive about all the info. He had exchanged w/ his classmates.
When you are little all you want to do is have fun with friends, but if your new to school you don't have any friends so you tell little fibs to make everyone think your cool. When Rodger catches Ira by telling him, "My mom said I could go over to your house whenever your mom says it's okay!" Ira realizes he needs to confess before it's too late.
That next day when it was sharing time Ira had something important to say. "I know I said we have all of those cool animals on our farm, but we don't." "We don't have any animas on our farm! My mom won't let me get a pet" he said. All his classmates in return, forgave
