The two novels are based in the past when women were not considered as equal to men. The characters, Tess and Jane are both the main characters of the novels 'Tess of the D'Urbervilles' and 'Jane Eyre'. 'Tess of the D'Urbervilles' is based on the experiences of Tess. Whereas, ' Jane Eyre' is an autobiographical book about Jane. The value of money plays a major role in both characters' life. The characters Jane and Tess are both women and so they are subject to discrimination. They both have a lot in common, for example both Tess and Jane are caring, brave, forgiving and very determined. Both characters faced challenges, difficulties and hardships, but they were able to tackle them with their best abilities. One of the main themes of both novels is the way men dominate women and the women's inferiority.

Jane Eyre's background is a sad one, at the beginning of the novel. She's an orphan, living with her cruel aunt and cousins who continually bully her. This prepares her for any future problems against her. Tess's childhood is spent with a loving family. This is the reason why she is so inexperienced, which leads to tragedy in her life. Jane had faced hardships which made her more enduring, but unfortunately for Tess, she had no such experiences. Jane having a good education was cleverer than Tess, who was poor and less educated. This shows the value of money in the past and its advantages. The money made people more greedy and discriminating, at that time. The advantage of money is with Jane and she is the one who is happy in the end.

The natures of Jane and Tess are very similar. The fact that they are caring is shown when Jane helps Mr. Rochester when he falls from his horse, she have felt what cruelty is like in her childhood and she doesn't want to make others have the same feelings . As far as Tess is concerned, the fact is proven when Tess takes care of her siblings. Moreover, both characters were very brave throughout the novels. Their bravery is proven when Jane stands up to her cousin (John) in the difficult situation (as an orphan) and Tess tries her best to save her family. She struggles and faces a lot of hardships, which proves Tess's bravery at the end of the novel. Furthermore, Tess and Jane are light hearted, they are forgiving. For example: Jane forgives her cousins and aunt for the unfairness they committed against her
