The first metaphor I really liked was from "Tichbornes's Elegy." It was the line "All of my good is but vain hope of gain." The reason being it was so vivid and informative. That one minute line explains so much about the writer and about him. It says that the only good he does is for hope that some gain will occur in his life. I could picture him as being a posing Christian. A person who isn't really good natured but acts good to get to the pearly gates. He is vain and selfish. He isn't concerned with how what he does helps or benefits another only what it will do for him in the long run. This line also appeals to me because of its honesty. It is so true. We live in the "Me" era where everyone is worried about self-actualization and self-aggrandizement. Other people's welfare has come increasingly unimportant and community and family unity have gone out the window.
The next didn't seem like a metaphor but was appealing none the less and it was the entire poem "Thaw Night." The personification in the poem created such a vivid visual image and tickled my senses. You can almost feel like you are there in that exact moment when the season changes. You feel the wind from the heaven's breath brush past your face. You can experience the berth of spring.
In "Mechanical Doll" the first stanza is what incites interest in me. She compares herself to the mechanical doll. I think this was in respect to her movements. I also think it could stand for her feeling at the time. She felt mechanical in an emotionless puppet of sorts. It isn't really specific thus able to represent so much which is very nice. It allows your imagination rove and expend all possibilities. I really like to be able to imagine things on my own.
Tickled my senses like a drunken stepfather without control.
