William's work as a doctor and the symbolic images of "Spring and All"

William Carlos Williams was born on September 17, 1883 in Rutherford, New Jersey. He was a poet, novelist and a doctor, and worked hard throughout his life. He was one of the principal poets of the Imagist movement. He had his own techniques and I just finished reading "Spring and All" by William Carlos Williams. I realized that Williams also used dashes in his poems just like Emily Dickinson used in her poetry. I also liked how Williams used contrasts between winter and spring, sickness and health and death and birth.

In the first stanza he pointed out that he was standing by the contagious hospital. The word "Contagious" means hospital The first stanza was almost like a scene from winter and how people get sicker usually during winter time. He talked about cold wind, muddy fields, and dried weeds which they seemed to symbolize winter.

In the first stanza it seems like he is talking about winter. He is standing under blue mottled clouds by the hospital. He is looking down muddy fields brown with dried weeds and the scattering of tall trees. All these terminologies sounds like using all The mottled clouds He says "By the road to the contagious hospital under the surge of the blue mottled clouds driven from the northeast"is standing by a hospital under the mottled clouds driven from northeast..

I love the contrasts in this poem, contrasts between winter and spring, death and birth, sickness and health. At first glance, it almost seems like the hospital, symbolizing illness and death, has spread its contagion to nearby plant life. Of course, rationally we know they've merely died because of winter's cold, but they still seem like a wasteland. Even spring is "dazed" and sluggish. Like the babies that Williams brings into the world, the plants enter the world "naked" and "uncertain of all." Though first stunned by their cold reception, the plants "grip down" and "begin to awake" to new possibilities.This same theme, perhaps one of Williams' major themes, can be found in another favorite, "Love Song:"
