Quote #1
“Look, I hate purity. Hate goodness. I don’t want virtue to exist anywhere. I want everyone corrupt.”
This quote reveals Winston’s character, for the first time he expresses his feelings to another human about how he hates people who follow the rules of big brother and wants people to break the rule by having sex and other forms of disobedience. This was one of the reasons why Winston fell in love with Julia because of their common beliefs. This quote relates to my theme corruption because it shows the true felling of a person who lived in Oceania and how they were fed up of with all the rules and lack of freedom. Winston figures if the whole world was corrupt than all the rules could be broken and then they could finally have freedom. Once corruption happens in the society, it can lead to a civil war between the rebels and the party. Therefore leading to a breakdown of the whole social system. The picture that best portrays this would be the devil. The devil is known to be devious, evil and manipulative and is known to hate all pure and good things in the world. Usually he walks around making good people become bad by using greed as a temptation, which results in the person’s soul to become corrupt
Quote #2
“Big brother is watching you”
There are posters all over Oceania with a picture saying “Big brother is watching you”, this is not just only words it’s the truth. There are telescreens and thought police around every corner observing you. This will eventually cause the destruction of freedom of speech and the ability for people to construct ideas or opinions. This is exactly what the party wants as it completely destroys the chance of a rebellion. This quote relates to corruption because by taking away peoples freedom and privacy it makes them feel uncomfortable just to walk out of their house. So they start to make organizations like the “brotherhood” and meet in secrete places where they can talk about anything they want with some privacy. By disobeying the rules they start to break the main rules of big brother which is having total control of every bodies mind. If they get out of the sight was big brother can watch you, that’s when the corruption starts to happen. I chose a picture of a hawk because the hawk is known for its great eye vision. It’s like the idiom you have eyes like a hawk; this means they notice everything which is exactly what the quote means.
Quote #3
“Do you begin to see, then, what kind of world we are creating? It is exact opposite of the stupid hedonistic utopias that the old reformers imagined. A world of fear and treachery and torment, a world of trampling and being trampled upon, a world which will grow not less but more merciless as it refines itself. Progress in our world will be progress toward more pain.”
This quote shows the reality of the corruption in the party and how the utopian world was really a dystopia in disguise. It talks about what is happening in the society like living in fear and treachery because the party took away their freedom. This quote relates to the thesis because it shows how the perfect world was really corrupt and ended in total chaos because of the laws that big brother were finally getting broken. I chose the snake as a symbol because in story of Adam and Eve the snake portrays the apple in such a way that Adam and eve take a bite; however, because of this they were banished from the Garden of Eden forever by God.
Quote #4
