A Rose for Emily

In the story, " A Rose for Emily, " by William Faulkner, the author reveals the causes' of Emily's plunge toward insanity and the final explanation as to Emily's demise.

In this story, events unfold one after the other of Emily's misfortunes, starting early in her life. The towns people begin to notice that Emily is a little strange when her father dies, which is very hard for Emily because this is the only person she has left. She had no mother, and her father ran off any possibilities for Emily to have boyfriends. So she was left with no one. When she refuses to accept the fact that her father is dead, she confines his corpse to her home for three days. The people of the town finally convince her to give up his body for burial.

Another misfortune comes Emily's way which she is unaware of it for some time. Emily meets Homer Barron, a construction worker from up north. She immediately finds herself attracted to him. He also shows interest in her, but not exactly the interest that she wants. Many of the towns people report that Homer is known to like men and is seen drinking with them in the local taverns. Emily is unaware of this, and is seen buying items with his initials engraved on them. Emily is completly unaware of his true sexuality. The town soon figures Homer is really dating Emily for her money. Emily is seen buying arsenic and the town figures she is going to kill herself. Little does the town really know what the arsenic is for.

Emily now old is forced with another misfortune. Years ago, a little after her father died, Judge Sartoris, feeling sorry for her, tells her that since her father loaned the town money she no longer has to pay taxes. Years later she begins to receive

tax notices and doesn't respond to them because she is on the notion that they are mistakes and doesn't pay them any mind. She soon begins to see tax collectors at her door, coming more and more frequent every day, she continually kicks them off her property over and over. Emily eventually passes away in her home. After the funeral the towns people begin to wander in her home, curious, because no one has been in her home for years. They wander upstairs to a room that no one has ever been in and find all the items she purchased for homer and find his decayed body in her bed.
