Case 4: Restructuring at Korea's Daewoo

Identification of Strategic Issues:

Daewoo was founded in 1967 by its hardworking chairman Kim Woo- Chong. Following are the key strategic issues identifies in the case-

The major issue in this case is that Daewoo went for massive restructuring of its business because of the following reasons-

1. The hands-off approach to manage companies in the Daewoo business went out of control.

2. As a result of increasing prosperity of the Koreans the workforce might lose the spirit of hard work. Moreover, there was a discontent among young workers and lessening of convention.

3. Daewoo was not dominant in any one industry. The strategy of being a supplier for major companies led it to bypass opportunities for becoming a major marketer of its own brands.

Analysis and Evaluation:

* As Daewoo's businesses went out of control, it started to take some major decisions to be successful in the market. It started with massive restructuring of its businesses. For example-

 The hands-off managerial style was replaced by a hands-on style, resulting in decentralization. Thousands of positions were eliminated and managers were retied or otherwise let go.

 Many unnoticed expenses in some of the unprofitable industries were observed and was paid attention.

 The company sponsored barbershops were eliminated which saved the company million dollars.
