Adulthood has many realities that most children and young adults do not see coming. In adulthood we go through internal changes as well as physical and mental changes but the emotional changes seem to be the hardest to deal with in some cases and I think it is because they are unpredictable for the most part. The reality of activities changing throughout adulthood can be a little more foreseen than emotional changes. There are so many changes leading up to adulthood and even through adulthood that some people do not "settle down" until retirement. In our adulthood most tend to take better care of themselves, taking the extra measures to maintain mental health as well.
Life is full of changes. There are many factors that can cause a change in point of views, ways of thinking and perception of many life issues and stages. Many times people will reflect on 10 years prior and wonder what he or she was thinking! Countless times this phrase has been spoken in my lifetime, "I wish I knew then what I know now!" So true!
Changes throughout adulthood are related to maturity, aging, learning and environment. I believe many people pick up traits from those who are around a lot. For instance, when best friends spend a lot of time together, they tend to talk and act similar. Parents also influence a child's way of thinking and influence the child's attitude.
A person's environment can alter the developmental and emotional growth of a child and adolescence. If traumatic events have occurred, the transition to adulthood could be completely re-routed. The way a child, adolescence and adult is taught to cope and deal with traumatic events could make the difference as to how the person develops emotionally.
As a young child, the child remains playful, inquisitive, "childlike" and has a sense of innocence. As a child grows to adolescence, the child is stuck between a child and an adult and the changes may be drastic and dramatic.
As a young child, a child may play with toys, enjoy fantasy and cartoons, and believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. As a child matures, the interests may change as well. I believe as an adult and parent, it is the parent's responsibility to put a child through 18 years of training. This is the training needed to prepare the child into becoming a responsible adult and to prepare the child to make good choices and use good independent judgment.
