The current air force training program allowed students to work independently with videotaped lecture and programmed instruction text. The problem of the current training program is that fast students have to wait for slow students to complete their introductory courses before the entire group can proceed to the next training program. As a result, a proposed alternative method offered computer-assisted instructions in which students viewed the same videotaped lecture and assigned to a computer terminal for instruction. The program wanted to compare the current and proposed methods of instruction for 122 students.
The descriptive statistical summary of the data for the current and proposed methods is shown in Table 1 of the appendix. The mean for current and proposed is close in value. The standard error and standard deviation of the current method has double in value than the proposed method. The standard variance of the current method is four times more than the proposed method.
We tested the difference between the two population means for the two methods. We formulated null and alternative hypothesis are:
Ho: µ1 - µ2 = 0 µ1 =mean value of current
Ha: µ1 - µ2 = 0 µ2 =mean value of proposed
The test statistic is in the two tailed, the t-value and p-value are shown in Table 2. In this case, we do not reject null hypothesis. We are 95% confidence that the two methods do not differ in completion time.
We found 95% confidence interval for current and proposed method in Table 4. We observed an overlap confidence interval between the methods. This means that it is likely that the mean difference of the population is the same.
We tested the equality of population variances for the two training methods. We formulated null and alternative hypothesis are:
Ho: σ12 ≤ σ22
Ha: σ12 > σ22
The test statistic is in the upper tail, the F-value and p-value are shown in Table 3. In this case, we reject null hypothesis. We are 95% confidence that the variance for the proposed method is lower than the variance of the current method.
We concluded the proposed method is better than the current method for course completion time. The recommendation is that the air force training
