AMCD Multicultural Counseling Competencies

There are important competencies that are important to a counselor, those are acknowledgement and skills Counselor awareness of the biases he or she may have are important when it faced with many cultures in counseling. A counselor who is aware of his or her own background also play a vital role in a leaving biases and prejudices out of counseling. Knowing limitations of competency and expertise are also reasons counselors acknowledge biases and are willing to publicly state there are differences in race, ethnicity and culture.

Awareness of the clients worldview is also important because as counselor comprehending both positive and negative reactions a client may hold towards a specific ethic group will hinder the bond between counselor and client. Counselors who are aware of race, ethnicity, and culture and how they play a part in one's job choice, one's personality, and psychological disorder requests for treatment are one's who are keenly aware of the multicultural aspects as it pertains to counseling.

Skills manifested as a counselor grows their awareness to the different cultures learning both verbal and nonverbal responses to engage clients will help in understanding various traditions with clients. Counselors who recognize the importance of being multicultural will seek colleagues advice when a situation arises they are unclear over.

Enhance Guidelines

Educate as much as possible would be my suggestion to those who may live in smaller regions where they are a part of their own culture. Have counselors/ student counselors be introduced to as many cultures as possible this will be advantageous when clients arrive that are of a different culture. The second recommendation that might enhance the already set guidelines is to explore different ethical standards that might not currently respect every culture and modify them accordingly.

Assist Counselors

With education comes a certain level of understanding. The more that counselors are introduced to many cultures the more they will be able to understand societal norms. Education is a continuing part of being a counselor, possibly adding a culture class every few years to stay aware of a specific ethnic group will help misconceptions that take place in counseling.
