Catton's purpose was to educate the reader on the leaders that brought the Civil War to an end. The two had many stark differences in regards to political views and government, but their similarities are apparent when it comes to their warrior instincts, perseverance, ability to unite their people, and to come to an agreement to end the war. Greer claims that families in eastern societies take a more active role in raising children. Cosby's explanation while humorous represents the everyday excitement when raising children. Children tend to be more spoiled in Western societies with toys and entertainment; in contrast, children in eastern society's are often deprived of toys and entertain themselves by playing outdoors. Greer would argue that the child is more attached to the mother while Cosby believes the child will be raised by both the mother and Father. In the beginning of Cosby's essay he makes it seem as if having a child is more of an option in western society; whereas, Greer believes a women will be considered a member of the husbands family only after she has given birth.
