Introduction
Analyzing the process of my daily routine of getting prepared for work and leaving in a timely manner has been an intriguing observation. The process consists of many tasks to be completed; however, tasks vary depending on the day of the work week. Likewise, time completion of my daily routine will vary from day to day. Time is the metric to be used as this will measure the completion of each task, and the period in which the process is completed. In this paper, current bottlenecks will be highlighted, and the main bottleneck will be discussed. The application of Godratt's theory of constraints will be used to explain methods of overcoming bottlenecks and improving the process.
Main Bottleneck
There are a few minor bottlenecks that affect the throughput of the process such as preparing my clothes, preparing lunch, filling up my water bottle, and texting while completing tasks. The main bottleneck that slows down throughput is taking a shower. The duration in which I am in the shower is contingent on if I need to wash my hair. I am from a multicultural background so my hair does not need to be washed every day. When I do need to wash my hair, an additional 15-20 minutes is added to my shower routine. The added amount is significant, especially because it takes me less time to drive and arrive to work.
Theory of Constraints
Dr. Eli Goldratt's problem-solving approach focuses on five specific points for improving production, distribution, and project management (Chase, Jacobs & Aquiliano, 2006). These steps can be used to improve the process of getting dressed and leaving for work in a timely manner. Step one has been achieved as the bottleneck has been identified. Step two discusses the constraint needs to made as effective as possible. In this situation taking a shower is mandatory, there just needs to be a more effective way in completing this task. In completing step three, certain tasks, such as preparing clothes or preparing lunch can be completed the previous night. Texting can be very limited or eliminated as this task is not needed in completing the daily morning routine. In step four there is a need to elevate the system constraint, shower time. When my hair needs to be washed, a shower can be taken the night before versus in the morning. This will permit for more time to complete morning tasks,
