Journal Prompt: On Page 12, Creon states, "No such ill currency ever appeared, as money to mankind : This is it that sacks cities, this routs out men from their homes, and it trains and turns astray the minds of honest mortals, setting them upon base actions." What is he saying and do you agree?

In Antigone when Creon says, "No such ill currency ever appeared, as money to mankind : This is it that sacks cities, this routs out men from their homes, and it trains and turns astray the minds of honest mortals, setting them upon base actions," he is saying that money is bad. If money hadn't existed, honest men would not do stupid and dishonest things. Money destroys people and cities. Money makes people do things that they wouldn't normally do. People become greedy and can be bribed easily with money, especially when they need it.

I agree with Creon's statement. In our society today we see theft and people being held for ransom and hit men, things that wouldn't exist it money was destroyed.

Although, somewhat contradicting, is the sad simple fact that money makes the world go around. We need money. When people provide a good or service they want something back in return. Money allows people to purchase that good or service and the person being paid can pay for something else. No one is going to just give something away. Money is a substitute for an item. When you buy a shirt you are paying the person who gave you the shirt so they can pay for their food. Even if we didn't have money and we traded food for a shirt, the same things would still happen. For example, if you wanted a shirt and had food but the person you were going to get the shirt from didn't like the food that you had and you really wanted the shirt, you might just take the shirt anyway and run. It is simple. People want the most that they can get because it is instinct. If someone could own the world, they would take it in a heartbeat just because they would obtain more power. Money is power and the more money you have, the more you can get. It is sad the way our world depends on a thing of so much and so little value at the same time. It's just a piece of paper, isn't it?
