Asiasports: Hockey Night In Canada
Plans/Positioning for the next five years
Barnes has a few different options available to him for the development of Asiasports over the upcoming years. He could build on what the company already has or begin exploring opportunities in other areas such as golf or softball. I think the most important thing for Barnes to consider is to remember his initial
goal of bringing hockey to prominence in Southeast Asia. If he starts to look into other areas then he is losing focus on his goal. And there is certainly more room for the development and growth of hockey in Southeast Asia. By not developing other properties, Asiasports is avoiding competition with other sports management companies in Hong Kong, and remaining the sole company involved with hockey.
I think the best option for Asiasports to take is to set up hockey leagues in Southeast Asia. The opportunity exists for this development as each place is very similar to how Hong Kong was when hockey was introduced in the 1990s and the rinks are already available as well. By developing leagues in these other cities, Asiasports is creating future opportunities to have bigger and more profitable tournaments. And once these leagues are established then there will be a greater interest throughout Asia and the creation of a semi-pro league would be a much more viable option. By expanding the locations of the hockey, Asiasports will be able to broaden the base of Asiasports company and increase the number of potential participants and sponsors.
So for the next five years, I believe
that Asiasports should continue as it has been operating and to introduce hockey to Bangkok, Manila, Taipei, Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City. This will start the foundation to expand and create much more profitable opportunities in the years to come. This will also enable Barnes to achieve his goal of bringing hockey to Southeast Asia.
