Ethics Awareness Inventory

As individuals we view ethics from different points of view. Most individuals will agree that there is a right and wrong, but they vary on their view points when it comes to making moral and ethical decisions. To understand the ethical nature of an individual, people can look into ones character rather than judging them by their actions. One needs to remember "do not judge a book by its cover." We all face ethical decisions on a daily basis but how we handle them is different for all.

Whether ethics is an innate or learned characteristic is debatable, however, what is not debatable is that ethics must be addressed and that importance is outlined with in a code of ethics. The code of ethics represents the standard of practice or behaviors in an organization. For many companies the code of ethics is how they expect their employees to conduct business and to act.

As a psychologist there are ethical standards put into place to be sure that they are following certain rules and regulations. Ethical standards are not exhaustive. Conduct is not something that is addressed by ethical standards, however, that does not mean that ones conduct is ethical (Ethical Principles of Psychologist and Code of Conduct).

Ethics in regards to a psychologist applies only to what they do with their science, academic, or professional duties. There are different ethical areas that apply to the different fields of psychology. Some examples of this would be like clinical counseling within schools because they have research, teaching, social action, and supervising those who are trainees. There is so much responsibility in making sure that each of these areas is covered and that no information is being leaked out. Clinical psychologist, have to do assessments, order further counseling, and even program different applications. It is vital that this information is kept confidential and that it is all done in a way that it would not be contaminated or altered. Code of ethics can be applied to various activities and context like the telephone, internet, other electronic transmissions, and even postal.

Members of the American Psychological Association (APA) are committed to comply with the standards set up by the APA along with any rules and procedures set up (Ethical Principles of Psychologist and Code of Conduct). Those who do not follow the guidelines set up by the APA can face some serious consequences if found guilty. Some of these fines can be very steep and can even cause one to lose their job and license as a professional.

I do believe that wisdom can add to ethical character and can create interaction such as personal interactions, justice, honesty, and integrity. This will help to encourage one to look into the goodness of character of different people, and to remember not everyone has the chance to develop ethic values.
