Throughout history drugs have had many different points of view on them. Through time anything that could be smoked, ingested, drunk, sniffed, to produced a alternate state of being have been central to exchange and consumptions. Through history drinks/ food have been associated with different nations. For example, British always had a cup of tea, the Americans had their cup of coffee. Coffee compared to tea had many differences. Coffee first appeared in 1400 in the Yemeni city of Mocca. Muslims were the first to use coffee. The Muslims used coffee spiritually. Overtime coffee spread through the world.
After coffee spread through the Middle East, it began to spread to Europe slowly. There were a few reasons why it took coffee a while to spread through Europe. First of all Coffee was a Muslim drink, so to the Europeans coffee was viewed as heretical. Another reason was that the Turkish way of coffee was thick and unsweetened, this was not normal for Europe. Also coffee was very expensive so this affected the lower class. Even though coffee was a world class item it took much time to deliver. de la Roque tried to change this by looking for a direct route. Then he came around one that went around the Cape of Africa to Mocca, this was a very good alternate route but the only catch was that it took two and a half years. At first the Arab’s accepted coffee, but soon it was feared that its addictive properties would mess with people’s minds. In 1511 people were already burning bags of coffee in the streets. Soon enough there were laws preventing operations in coffeehouses. But still in many places coffeehouses became centers of political intrigue and fleshy vice.
In the seventeenth century coffee was gaining popularity in Europe. Brought by Venetian traders, first considered a medical drug. Coffeehouses during this time served as meeting areas, distributed the latest news, and the first men’s club. Later a death sentence of twin brothers was changed to an experiment. One would be given tea, the other coffee. The tea drinker died first, the other brother lived to 83. After this Sweden became the worlds largest coffee consumer.
