The Lincoln Welland Regiment of St. Catharines Ontario has stood as a proud infantry reserve regiment since 1794. Over the course of Lincoln Welland's existence, it has received 26 battle honours for the sacrifice and efforts made in battle. One the battle honours which Lincoln Welland proudly served for was the battle of the Seine in 1944. In this battle, the regiment assisted the allied forces in destroying the German offensive and their debilitating their combat power. This objective was apart of "Operation Overlord", an assault that would cut off German resistance in Western Europe.
The Seine is a river located in France running through Paris. Canada's position in battle of the Seine took place on the South-East side of the North Sea. The Canadians would push the offensive through Scheldt, completing their objective at Rotterdam.
The battle of the Seine was apart of a large allied offensive to in WWII to progress from Normandy to the Scheldt. The allied command formulated a plan to cross the Seine and launch an offensive of 40 divisions to advance through Brussels and Antwerp, in turn setting up for a German surrender. This objective was organized under the supervision of General Dwight D. Eisenhower of the United States and General Bernard Montgomery of Britain.
Operation Overlord was to reach the Seine by D-Day +90. This was one of the final phases of D-Day, destroying the remaining German resistance in France. Operation Overlord faced minimal resistance from German forces except for the First Canadian Army. The Lincoln Welland Regiment assisted in the force of The First Canadian Army as they encountered the last remaining combat resistance in France. The Battle occurred in the Foret de la Londe as the Canadian Forces successfully closed off the escape of the German Seventh Army across the river.
Operation Overlord and the battle of the Seine were both successful. The allies were able to meet the objective date of D-Day +90. The success of this battle and operation gave the allied forces a foot hole they needed in Western Europe, regaining control of France, and therefore Western Europe. They would now be able to push the German forces back towards the East, ultimately cornering the Germans into surrender.
