Being a Pediatrician

Many people out there say that being in the medical field only has to do with being a doctor. Although most are doctors, not all are. There are over 200 different types of careers that deal with the medical field. Some can include therapists, surgeons, psychologist, etc. One career job that interests me is a pediatrician. A pediatrician is a physician that deals with children from the age of newborn to eighteen years old. To be a pediatrician a person has to go through a lot of series of challenges. Also, a person requires having many skills with the children that they are going to work around with. Being a pediatrician can be very hard to accomplish but with hard work and determination, anything is possible.

To start off, a pediatrician needs to have a lot of skills to deal with little children to teenagers. A pediatrician needs to be gentle, patient, and very sympathetic with the children they're going to be with. Many children are not used to being talked to by any other adult except their parents. Pediatricians need to understand the children and try to get to them by making them laugh, giving them treats, and being plain old nice. When a child sees that the pediatrician is a nice person and harmless, that child will get accustomed with their pediatrician and see them as their best friend or parent sometimes. Patience comes in when a child is crying in pain, nervousness, or any other feeling. Many adults today abuse little kids when they cry due to the fact that they don't have the patience to deal with this sound. However, pediatricians need to have this patience when the child is crying so that way the doctor can get through the process and finish successfully. On the other hand, pediatricians don't only deal with small children but also young adults or teenagers. This sometimes can be a hard process as well. A teenager is much more intelligent than a small child therefore can have more feelings and words to show to the doctors. To get to a teenager can sometimes be harder than a small child itself because today teenagers feel awkward to talk to adults. Others are very bright young adults that can talk to an adult and make a great conversation with them as if the doctor is their best friend.

A pediatrician's job not only has to deal with children all day long but sometimes other sorts of jobs too. A pediatrician's day starts off when they go to the hospital and see newborn babies they might be dealing with in the future. They write down information about those newborn babies and go on to check on patients. These patients are the ones who go to the hospital who check in as sick or injured. Before dealing with a patient the doctor see and reads the information about the patient such as how they feel, allergies, and why they are sick. Then, the doctor treats the patient correctly giving them advice and gives them a prescription about medications. After, the pediatrician talks to the child's parents about the treatments and once again the advice. Ultimately, the pediatrician writes a discharge order for the patient and tells the nurse about tests, medications, and information that need to be put in the computer about the patients. Not only that, but pediatricians then get phone calls from insurance companies asking questions about the coverage of the hospital stays. The pediatrician then goes to their office where they stay looking over information while other private patients come in for check-ups or injuries. They give the children their treatment and write prescriptions for the medication the child needs. Throughout the whole day, the pediatricians will get phone calls from parents telling them child is sick, insurance companies, etc.

A pediatrician's job seems simple and easy to do, but it requires a lot of training. Before being a pediatrician a person needs to go for college for four years to get their bachelors degree or "pre-med". Next, they have to take a test called the MCAT to get into medical school. If successful a person then goes to medical school for four years. Once medical school is done, the person has to be in pediatric residency for
