Prospectus Worksheet
Prepared by Dr. Gene Fenster, Biology Instructor,
and Mary McMullen-Light, Writing Specialist
Your name:
For this portion of the project, you will need to locate the source material your project will be based on. You will need to find one source that makes a claim you would like to investigate. Choose a topic you find interesting because you will be working with it for the rest of the semester.
You might choose a commercial, a tabloid or newspaper article, a print advertisement from a magazine, an Internet site or discussion, a video, a television program, or even a conversation with a friend or relative. You will need to provide a copy of the source to the instructor, no matter what that source is. If it is a conversation or interview, you will need to provide a transcript. If it is visual media, you will need to provide a tape. Otherwise, a hard copy of the advertisement, the article, or the Internet material would be adequate. Remember: No science sources for this portion of the project!
Complete the following questions:
1. What is the title of your source (if it has one)?
Red wine 'can prevent deafness'
2. Who is the author(s) of this source?
Ananova
3. What is the date of publication?
2006
4. If this is visual media, who are the producers/directors or sponsors of the object, product, or site?
5. Clearly explain the claim you are choosing to investigate.
That drinking red wine can prevent deafness later in life, because the wine acts as an antidote to ear damage caused by loud noises. The wine has antioxidants that neutralize radicals that damage the ear.
6. Write an "If...then..." statement that is based on your claim. The
statement should take the form "If [statement of claim] then [predicted
outcome]".
