Tom Evangelist is a bounty hunter in New York. He has a very strong passion for justice and for his job. This story opens with him having a phone call with his son's principal because his son had been searched for no reason on account of a missing calculator. Even though this would have been a small issue for most parents and possible could have been easily resolved. Since Tom is a bounty hunter his perception of the law and justice are different then those of normal people.

He reflects many of the ideals of the justice and dignity because he feels so strongly about them. In the story the author explains to what degree he feels about justice and the law. The story mentions "He always carries the jurisdictionally relevant legal literature. In New York he takes section 530.80 of the Criminal Procedure Law (a procedural translation of the Constitution." To further explain how important justice and the law is to him. The author stated that he carries "his badge and a laminated excerpt of an 1872 Supreme Court ruling, Taylor v. Taintor, the first and last legal decision to fully enumerate his unique powers."

I believe that the author chose to open with this seen to show us how important and serious he takes his job. Also to show us how important and serious justice is to him. He opened with this to also show how he his cautious about what he does. He just doesn't act first and think later. He thinks before he acts. He does research and looks into things before he decides what to do. This also shows how justice is a very big part of his life.

He tracks down criminals who skip bail and he brings them to justice. I don't think I would have opened this story any other way because it lets you know about the characters morals and how he feels about justice. Also what his definition of justice is.
