What are the issues confronting Thomas in this case?

This case reveals several issues that Thomas has faced and he wasn't prepared for the job. Thomas was assigned to set up business operations in central Hungary. One issue Thomas really faced was assuming that he could operate the same policy and procedures as if he was still in the U.S., he refuse to study the customs or the social structure.

Thomas was sent for a purpose and now he is realizing the difficulties of accomplishing ones goal of setting up and office, hiring staff, and of acquiring stations. Thomas and his staff was lack of understanding of the worker pool. The styles of Thomas management skills acquire a difficult path of him not getting the stations. Thomas still doesn't realize that he is putting work ahead instead of building relationships.

How well is Thomas dealing with these issues?

Thomas is faced with several issues and seems a little frustrated with the delegating the project. Some of his employees lacks motivation, as stated in the case "To date Thomas had hired 16 employees. Four quit within three days on the job, and six were let go after a trial period for being absent from work, failing to perform duties, or showing a lack of initiative" (Larson & Gray, 2011). This situation intensifies Thomas delegating work and failing to complete his assignments punctually and efficiently.

Thomas feels that managerial style is the best fit for him to manage the project however it's not compatible with Hungarian norms. Thomas biggest mistake is trying to articulate an U.S. style of management to an international country to conduct business. The frustration and discouragement that Thomas is feeling is the high employee turnover rate and lack of motivation displayed by his Hungarian employees.

What suggestions would you have for Thomas in managing this project?

There are several important factors that Thomas must overcome and the suggestions I would give Thomas is first is taking time to study the culture. The importance of learning the culture is to understand how business is conducted in Hungary. Another important factor is for Thomas to hire a business consultant who will teach him how to lead his Hungarian team successfully.
