1599 July 15th

Dear diary,

Others have arrived, like my mother. They speak a different language; English they call it. They are kind and warm. There is one older and one younger, the older I think is called… Prospero I think. He is powerful and strong but yet so kind. I will teach him the springs and the fruit trees. The other one is named Miranda. Such a beautiful name, Miranda. She is so kind and sweet. She teaches me this English and helps me. She is compassionate. Such a young and bright life, full of hope.

        1601 August 12th

Dear diary,

I am not alone anymore. Since my mother’s passing I have been so lonely. No more. Now I have two that I love so dearly, and I like to believe they love me just as I. Miranda has grown. She can now reach the berries and run around the fields of the island. So tall and beautiful, her hair flows like grass in the wind or waves in the ocean. She used to be so small but now she is like me. But pretty, so extraordinarily pretty. When she sleeps, when she smiles, when she teaches me to name things.

1608 February 2nd

Dear diary,

All I did was love, where has it got me. I lost everything. Out of an act that was only so natural, I am damned to serve and kneel to none other than Prospero whom I would have already given my life for in the blink of an eye. Why must he be so mean? He orders me around and sends spirits to torment me. I no longer have the beautiful Miranda’s smile to brighten my day. Before they came I was so dark, so sad for my mother Sycorax had left me alone on this island. She lightened me like the sun lights the moon. But now I am as good as alone again.

        1611 September 1st

Dear diary,

Two more have arrived. Though they don’t have a smile to brighten me, yet they have this bottle. When you kiss this bottle, all of a sudden nothing matters. They are from heaven. The gods have sent them to end my torment. I vow to serve them now, for they are kind to me as Prospero once was. I will be free of the torment that is put upon me by seeing Miranda hide from me each day whilst Prospero makes it his duty to make this island, which is mine by my dead mother Sycorax, my own personal hell.
