In the novel Candide by Voltaire, Candide is in love with this woman of a much higher social class. After leaving whom he loves, Candide lives through a series of absurdly bad events in order to be reunited with who he loves. "Martin claims that humans "live either in convulsion of misery or in the lethargy of boredom. I agree with Martin, I think us individuals either undergo a series of events that happen in our life or become lazy and don't take life serious.
After all this all these character's try to get out of some difficulty there facing or any miserable problem or situation. Something their facing is boredom they all cannot seem to find out a way on their own and need some type of advice but being bored doesn't seem to take anyone anywhere as when you're unhappy you think for a while then you eventually move on with your life. I also think when Martin states "live either in convulsion of misery or in the lethargy of boredom" seems to show that this is not showing no signs of happiness but an absence of suffering, as one is suffering misery doesn't always mean they are bored.
All these stuff related to money, security, and peace does not seem to attract Candide. As Martin states his statement Candide finds a way through self-work and improvement. Even though Martin is good at telling how one behaves he fails to do so with Cacambo. "Martin abides by ideas that discourage any active efforts to change the world for the better", by this statement I agree with Martin. Although Candide goes through a lot because of his love but he works his way up.
