EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Cargo and Container Handling Co. Ltd which was located in Colombo is now located in Wattala. It is a 24 hour operation and the manual workers work on two shifts.
There were plenty of issues such as stagnant water making the sewage system worse, heavy vehicles could not travel easily as the roads were heavily damaged due to rain. The yard had few spot lights which were almost fused and broken. Wirings were quite old to be used and had to be used carefully.
Further more, services and benfits such as uniforms, laundryman not regular, no canteen, far location of first aid box, lack of drinking water available did not provide with desired results to the company.
Therefore to overcome all these issues, all the health hazards should be considered and reasonable conclusions must be given.
QUESTION 1: IDENTIFY THE HEALTH HAZARDS AT CARGO AND CONTAINER HANDLING CO.LTD CONTAINER YARD
Hazard is a source, situation or act with a potential for harm in terms of human injury or ill health. In a work environment, hazards can arise from different aspects of work including the physical work environment, equipment, materials and substances used, work tasks and how they are performed and work design and management. Irrespective of the cause, all hazards needs to be identified in a proper risk management process.
The types of health Hazard can be illustrated as follows :

Cargo and Container Company Ltd consists a number of health hazards that should be sorted accordingly. The most acceptable health hazards of the company can be listed as follows;

QUESTION 2 : IDENTIFY THE FACTORS WHICH ARE LIKELY TO CAUSE OCCUPATIONAL DISEASES
An occupational disease is a health condition caused, exacerbated or significantly contributed to by exposure to a hazard in the work environment. Occupational diseases can be of different types , they can be either : communicable, acute, primary and local.
The following factors are the main causes to occupational diseases :
- Stagnation of water results in diseases such as malaria, dengue which will ultimately lead to rashes and allergies
- Exposure to dust causes respiratory problems
- No canteen facilities means employees tend to buy food from outside the premises which may create diarrheal problems
- No ventilation results in employees fainting and unable to concentrate on their work effectively
- Employees who wash and paint 40 foot long containers get severe back pains
- No drinking water in the yard – urine infections occur when you drink uncontaminated water
- Lightning issues in the work place would result in less eye sight or loss of eye sight.
QUESTION 3 IDENTIFY THE ACTION THAT CAN BE TAKEN TO IMPROVE THE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT
The Cargo and Container Ltd consists of certain internal and external environment that needs to be improved in order to avoid future health related issues. Actions must be taken to improve such internal and external issues.
INTERNAL ENVIRONMENT FACTORS AND ACTIONS
- No canteen available
- Set up a canteen within the company premises incurring reasonable cost.
- Lockers are situated far away from the work stations
- Install a locker system close to the yard so that employees can reach the lockers rapidly at ease.
- First Aid box is located only in the HR Department
- Place the first aid box according to the distance.
- In large factories the distance should be 30 metres.
- Ventilation issues
- Have optimum working temperature : office : 24-25 and factory : 25-26
- Drinking water
- Setup a filter close to the work area
- Provide wholesome water without restrictions
- Water stations to be kept : 1 in 50 metres
- Posters
- Educate employees on understanding what the message is given
- Training must be provided to use general PPEs.
- Recommend Safety Manager for both day and night shifts.
EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT AND ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN:
- Remove stagnant water allowing the water to flow smoothly.
- Eradicate mosquitoes by making the long roads to avoid all mud pits.
- Insert new wiring and lighting facilities where old wires are in danger to be used.
