CAT IN THE RAIN

In the short story ,writen by E. Hemingway, "CAT IN THE RAIN" , the main character George' s wife sees a cat in the rain from the window of the room. She wants to bring the cat to the room but his husband is indifferent to her request and continues to read his newspaper. Although it seems as an ordinary event, there lies an important point under these lines which makes us think that it is an illusion, indeed, the cat is the wife herself, because there are similarities between their conditions such as they both need help and care, they are ignored by the others except for hotel owner , they are unhappy with their life.

As we see in the story George does not intersted in his wife's concerns. He just reads his paper and replies the wife's quetions in short sentences. it can be understood that she has some psychological problems because she sees illusion and she need help and care. However; the man , may be he fed up with her, instead of doing what she wants, he is irrevelant to her. So woman feels alone and she sees herself as a poor cat in the rain and no one helps it to save from the rain .

Another intersting point in the story is that hotel owner is the only one who interested in her. When she goes downstairs the hotel owner sees her and gives importance to her . He helps her into go out in the rain to take the cat inside although they couldn't find it. Later the owner sends a cat to her room with a maid. When we take in to consideration that woman sees herself as a poor cat, by saving a cat from the rain, the the owner of the hotel is the only one who tries to save her from her problems. That makes him the hero of the story though he does not take part much in the story.

We can easily extract from the whole story that the woman has not a happy life . although we can not cleary understand the reason of her illness from the story, feeling lonely and her husband irrelevance may be considered as the main reasons of her ilness.

At last but not least there is no cat in the rain it is an illusion that has been seen
