As much as great this book by Dave Pelzer was, there was some things I did not like. One of the things I didn't like was the fact that his father didn't do anything when he saw his beloved child in pain. What kind of father does that? I understand that David's mother had control over her husband, but a good father would try do anything to save his son from all of this pain. Other family members never did anything to help David. One example of this is when his mom stabbed him, he was in a lot of pain and when he told his dad what had happened, his dad just said "well you should go finish the dishes". Even his dad wouldn't take him to the hospital. Another example was when David's dad moved out and didn't take him with him. David and his dad had talked about getting out of the house together and when his dad left without taking him, David felt deserted. His dad could have saved him but didn't and then David thought he would never get away from his mother. David's brothers didn't help him either. When David had to sit in the freezing tub of water, his brothers could have been on his side, but instead they would bring people over to see him and to laugh at him.
However, there was one thing I did like. It was the fact that in David's horrible life, there was somebody who cared for him since his own brothers and parents didn't. The caring person was the school nurse in his elementary school who did not believe David's lies that he got the bruise from slamming into the door. David knew that this lady cared because whenever he needed help, she was always there for him and when she hugged him, he felt that he was in the right arms and never wanted to let go. I was relieved when I read David say "I tell myself, She is so warm and I don't want to let go. I want to stay in her arms forever".
My favorite part of the book is at the end when David is finally free and is no longer a helpless child. I also like this part because he begins to believe in God again because he gave up his belief before when his mother beat him. I was so happy at the end because I could feel the happiness and pleasure that David felt.
This book talks about some serious issues that will make the reader have many emotions. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes books that are true stories about survival. This book really opens your eyes and makes you want to make sure it doesn't
