This movie was inspired by a true life event over a controversial high school basketball concerning the coach named Coach Carter. Coach Ken Carter who received both praise and staunch criticism when he made national news in 1999, for not letting his basketball team play and locking the gym doors and canceling all the games.

Coach Carter comes into Richmond High School to take over as the coach of their basketball team. The basketball players have to sign a contract for each of them. The contracts are clear and in writing that the players would understand. The players signed the contracts which stated "they will attend all classes, sit in the front row in all of their classes, they must maintain a certain grade point average and on game day they are required to wear ties.

When the players don't keep their side of the contract about the GPA , The coach decides to put chain and locks on the gym doors and he cancels all games until his team can do better in their classes. Coach lays down the consequences for the guys to be able to play again. The coach has teamed up with some college girls and teachers to help tutor the players to help them reach their required GPA in order for them to be able to play once ago. Coach Carter finally has a heart to heart talk with the team about achieving better things in their lives and doesn't ever settle for anything lesser.

Each year of the anniversary of the lockout is celebrated. This coach teaches his players that all of them will become successful and move onto college. Coach Carter shows his team that he will help them overcome any obstacles that may become a problem. When the coach does the lockout a lot of the parents
