On most college campus, drug and alcohol use is very heavy. Most individuals believe that drug and alcohol use begins in college when students are away from their parents, but in most cases, that is not always true. Many individuals who consume alcohol and drugs started at very young ages, usually between thirteen and seventeen. Between the ages of thirteen and seventeen, children in middle school and high school are very vunerable and more prone to giving into peer pressure. Thirteen is usually the age when parents start to feel comfortable leaving their children home alone, therefore opening the door to freedom and experimentation. When children are left home alone with an open liquor cabinet, a mind full of curiosity, and a group of pressuring friends, inappropriate things can happen. As a result, unattended children can end up experimenting, and sometimes become addicted to alcohol and drugs without their parents knowledge.
Parents should always talk to their children about the dangers of alcohol and drug use, while at the same time showing model behavior. Many children have started consuming drugs and alcohol because they see their close family members doing it. Even if parents are alcoholics or drug addicts, they should at have the decency to not want that type of lifestyle for their children.
In conclusion, alcohol and drug use is sometimes very popular on college campuses, but it does not mean that it started there. Just because students on a college campus are all in the same place, does not mean that they all came from the same background.
