Compare and Contrast Essay

By Jayden Thomas

Living up to another identity or being yourself? Which makes you more popular? Which is better? Which one will people appreciate about you? These are questions we need to ask ourselves before we try and live to someone else’s standards. Someone else’s standers are not the standards for you. You may be capable of a lot more than what they think.

Now, a time I tried to live up to someone else’s standards was with my friend Josh. He was always picking on me because he was popular. I wanted so badly to have that kind of popularity. So, what else could I do? I tried to be like Josh and his friends. Well, it worked for a time, but eventually it got old. I got tired of it. I decided that if me and him were going to become friends, it would happen some other way. And if it didn’t… then, oh well! The experience of being… “someone else”, wasn’t as great as I thought it would be. Actually, it wasn’t great at all…

Now, you may be thinking, ok… so he stops trying to be friends with Josh. What now? Well, I want to tell you that we are given our personalities for a reason. Our personalities probably won’t go hand-in-hand with everyone else’s, but your personality is going to help you make a friend one day. A lifelong friend. Someone that you will always be able to count on when you need him/her the most. Back to my story though.

So, a couple years have passed now and me and Josh get along better. He stopped bullying me and I stopped annoying him. So, I realized that it was myself that he enjoyed being around. Not the “Try to please Josh me”! We started becoming friends and then one day, we became nearly inseparable! We were good friends. But now… Josh has moved away to New Mexico. We don’t see each other hardly ever. Sometimes for big church events. But not often.

In conclusion, I believe that it is better to be your own person rather than being another to please someone else. Maybe that one-person doesn’t like you, but there are others that do. Just be the best you that you can be and you will succeed.
