To compare the two visual communication pieces. To discuss the general purpose and audience through the analysis design elements and principles and evaluate the effectiveness for achieving its purpose.
Visual communication is actually provides information about its purpose. I classified the two visual pieces into two, the first visual piece is US World War II (1942) and the second visual is VTAC visual piece for tertiary application. The purpose of the first visual piece is to persuade women by inform them that they are capable of doing male job. In 1942 was when all of male going for war and the government support women to go work. Woman took jobs or volunteered in staffing weapons factories, earning the nickname of "Rosie the Riveter." Intense rationing efforts of certain foods and materials, such as rubber and metals, were also enacted to feed war machine. The likely audience for this visual piece will be female, age 18 to 30 years old, who have not joined any volunteering activity.
The purpose of the second visual piece is to promote and advertise for VTAC tertiary applications. VTAC tertiary is Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre. VTAC is the administrative body which processes applications for universities (and other tertiary institutions) in the state of Victoria (Australia). VTAC also calculates the Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank (ENTER) for Victorian Year 12 students. The audience for this visual piece will be Year 12 students, age 17 to 19 years old.
The graphics technique that has been used by the first visual piece is freehand drawing using 3D perspective technique and computer generated image. It is obvious that they have been used freehand drawing for the woman picture. The letters have generated by using computer. The graphics technique that is used in the second visual piece is digital photography and digitally alerted image. They have used these two techniques for the background.
I will be discussing design elements applied in both visual pieces. The Design elements which applied in the visual piece are tone, texture, colour, and letterform. The using of tone in the visual piece applied in a shirt that the women wear. This blue shirt is contrasting with the background colour which is yellow that makes the woman appear stand out. They used texture in the skin colour of woman. By using texture, the skin colour of the woman looks real. Colour-they chose 2 contrasting dominant colour which is blue and yellow. These two colours made the visual piece attract the audience. Yellow and blue are too dominant in the visual piece, it is necessary to put another colour, in order to bring the theme of the visual piece together. The use of colour is not effective, because they should have put some colour other than yellow and blue, to make harmony in the visual piece. This visual piece was made in 1942, there might be not many variation of font style yet. Therefore, they just used the simple style of font. The letterform of the sentence "we can do it" has been put in the capital letter and bold, it gives impression that the sentence is the most important message that they want to convey to the audience. From the angle of the audience, the first thing the audience will see is the picture of woman and then the message that the woman said. The picture of woman will have more impact in the audience mind rather than the message. Therefore, the using of letterform is not effective for this visual piece, because the colour of the letter make it less important in the entire content of the visual piece.
Design elements that have applied in the second visual piece are line, colour, and letterform. The use of line is in the background, they use it just to give the effect to the background. The dominant colour in the visual piece is blue and yellow. They use these colours partially, such as: half of the background colours are yellow and half of it blue. The uses of these colours are to give contrast effect that will attract audience. The colours of year and words letter are different. The colour of Ð''year' letter is white on the blue background area. This makes the letter stand out and easy to read. The colour of Ð''words' is yellow on the yellow background area. Therefore, to read the words the audience needs more attention because it is not readable. The use of colours in the letterform is not effective, because the message (the words) of the visual piece not readable. They used different type of letterform for the Ð''year' and Ð''words'. The font size of the Ð''year' is greater than the letters size. The message in this visual piece is the letters, but Ð''the words' is put in the same colour as background colour and the size is smaller than Ð''the year'. Therefore, the use of the letterform is not effective.
Both visual pieces have colour and letterform as the design elements that have in common. The dominant colour in both visual pieces is the same, which is blue and yellow. In the first visual piece, they used the pure yellow and blue colour. On the other hand, in the second visual piece, the colours have been made to be more transparent, so it is not blocking the images background. The use of letterform in the first visual
