The importance of regulating your own life and not letting someone have corrupt power over you is more important than taking an unsafe risk. Man is deemed free by not having a controlling figure acting on one’s actions or wishes. For one to be safe they must not be exposed to danger or risk of any kind. Because many consider themselves unsafe without freedom, the average man would rather be free than safe, since man will put themselves in danger to reach the desired goal of freedom i consider H. L. Mencken’s claim untrue and undesirable to the average man. The topic of free and safe are broad words open to interpretation and could be pushed to boundaries by man.
In contemporary society violence is an unsafe way that people protest their freedom to prove a point. One ongoing movement is the “Black lives matter” movement that has cause a seesaw type of clash in society causing a major split. African American people were being singled out by the authoritative position of the police. They acted on the injustice acts of violence in response to the violence they had been given. They were willing to die knowing that themselves or others may get the freedom they deserve and desire.
In “The Giver”, by Lois Lowry, one of the key themes is the idea that having safety and security requires giving up a certain degree of freedom. In Jonas’s society, they’ve given up almost all freedom to have a world free of pain and suffering. No one in the community is poor or homeless, there is virtually no crime, and there is always enough to eat. On the other hand, people in Jonas’s world don’t get to choose their own careers, feel the joy and pain of love, or experience sunshine and color. The giver transports these feeling to Jonas, and he soon realizes what he was missing in life and seeks out for it. He goes through many dangerous obstacles the nearly have him killed but he doesn't look back because he knows the freedom and choices he could have and how much that was worth for him.
Benjamin franklin says, “They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Franklin hits home saying if you aren't willing to fight for it then you don't deserve it. In conclusion, many people have battled to gain their freedom, even at the risk of their own safety. To live without freedom and free will and instead of someone govern over you with the promise
