Corp Values - Written Assignment
The problems of the world are products of our society and almost every quandary can stem from the steadily declining responsibility of people. Zell Miller describes responsibility in two parts, "personal and collective." Personal responsibility is related to the means that a person must undertake in order to achieve their own goals. Miller says, "Individuals can have anything they want out of life if they are willing to work hard enough to earn it." The problem with America continues to be its citizens digressing motivation. The laziness of the people can be seen as a cause of the lack of collective responsibility as well. Whether the responsibility is to your family, friends or platoon. Miller explains how each person carries responsibility for everyone else in each specific group.
Corps Values has some good points, but I believe it has too much devotion to the marines. The ideals used in an organization where discipline is implemented in order to create good soldiers may not be perfect for the common man. There is no doubt that Miller's observations of society are correct. There should be an overwhelming concern about the responsibility of parents over their children, but I believe that the responsibility should be reinforced. Miller talks about his parenting skills, "My sons once had a Little League baseball coach who could not understand why I wouldn't allow either of my boys to play in an important game because one of them had gotten into a fight the day before. But I did not have any further problem with either fighting." I do not agree with Miller's decision to exploit both boys from the game when only one was fighting. His seemingly lack of concern about violent and aggressive behavior in his sons is another aspect I do not agree with. The story is not complete because miller does not fully divulge the parameters behind the fighting, but nonetheless, fighting should be discouraged not ignored. Instead of using the words personal and collective I believe responsibility is an obligation and an opportunity. The obligation lies within family, where the parents are responsible for their children and the children responsible for their elderly parents. The only way the exchange is implemented is through, responsibility. The opportunity can be attributed to one's self. Opportunities to be whatever you want and only through determination
