"Courage is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what" (Lee 112).Harper Lee and Stephenie Meyer made courage a major theme in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird and Twilight to portray that courage can make a positive difference in everyday situations. This is shown throughout the novel through physical, emotional, and mental courage. The most prominent form of courage is physical.
"Physical courage is demonstrated when one puts itself in front of danger"(wikiquotes). In the novel Mrs. Dubose forced herself through with-drawls to become addiction free before she passed. Indeed she over came her addiction, but soon passed. She made a difference for herself to overcome the addiction, and be at peace before she passed, and she used physical courage to do so (Lee 99-112). Atticus did what was right, and that was to go against his family and friends opinion of defending Tom Robinson. Atticus used all his effort to prove Tom Robinson was innocent. Even though the jury thought different, Atticus had gone against his peers opinions. Atticus portrayed emotional courage to go against his peers opinions(Lee). As a matter of fact, Jem portrayed an equal amount of emotional courage in the novel by, staying when Mrs. Dubose had her with-drawls. When Mrs. Dubose was having a with-drawl, Jem sat there and kept reading, that took a lot of emotional courage to
