1.Culture is how we function as a group. Values, technology, etc. We live out our lives in the social groups in
which we belong.
2.Culture Shock is, the difficulty people have adjusting to a new culture that differs from their own.
3.An example of culture shock is going to another country or another culture.
4.Ethnocentrism is the judgment on other cultures, thinking that our culture is superior.
5.Cultural Relativism is the recognition that social groups and cultures must be studied and understood on their
own terms before valid comparisons can be made.
6.Ethnocentrism is the judgment of a culture where as Cultural relativism is kind of like taking a survey.
7. Material culture is something that is used in everyday life. Ex: technology. Buildings, etc.
8.Non Material culture is beliefs in your head, something that only you may believe in, such as knowledge,
values and appropriate behavior.
9.Norms are the rules and behavior that are agreed upon and shared within a culture and prescribe limits of
acceptable behavior.
10.Mores are strongly held norms that usually have a moral connotation and are based on the central values
of the culture. Negative beliefs, such as rape, murder, incest, child molestation.
11.Folkways are norms that permit a wide degree of individual interpretation as long as certain limits are not
overstepped. People may look at you funny, but you will not get in trouble or arrested.
12.Ideal Norms are expectations of what people should do under perfect conditions. Ex: waking up and going to
school, obeying a curfew, and not speeding.
13.Real Norms are norms that are expressed with qualifications and allowances
