Current Business Practice Audits
Riordan Manufacturing was founded in 1991, since then the company has grown exponentially to include locations in Michigan, California, Georgia, and China. Our team will look and brake down its current business practices as it relates to sustainability at each location. Our team will assess what aspects of Riordan's business practices will benefit from implementing a sustainability plan, and what voluntary steps it can take to make these changes. Our team will also make an assessment of what federal and state regulations will Riordan Manufacturing need to adhere to.
Non-sustainable Practices
In reviewing the audits there are three non-sustainable business practices that are part of daily operations for Riordan Manufacturing that need immediate attention.
* The first of these is the manner in which waste, be it industrial, or hazardous, is disposed of.
* Second is the emissions generated by the production of metal parts, fan blades the use of sealants, solvents, particulates from mixing.
* Third is energy consumption in the manufacturing process, lighting, heating
Negative Effects on the Environment
Non-sustainable practices in business help shape public opinion and governmental policy (DesJardins, 2007). Therefore Riordan Manufacturing must keep in mind the consequences of the way they conduct their manufacturing operation, how they dispose of waste from off spec raw materials, hazardous waste should not be disposed of with regular trash. The effects of doing this are far reaching as chemical mix with the soil and it becomes contaminated as it can also get in to the water supply and cause health issue for humans and animals. Emissions from gasses during laser cutting, solvents, particulates from mixing create among others compounds that react with oxygen and contribute to greenhouse gases and the depletion of the ozone layer.
Furthermore if not kept in check these gases can be harmful to those in close proximity to the area including those employees doing the work. The third area of concern is the energy consumption of the manufacturing process at all plants. The energy spent during processing lighting and heating. This not only comes at a cost and affects the bottom line of the organization but also the continued use of raw materials from energy generating plants that release harmful gasses into the atmosphere. This also contributes to the warming of the planet and pollution.
Laws and regulations to which Riordan must adhere

Environmental sustainability has become a crucial element in doing business responsibly and successfully at Riordan. As striving to be a solution provider, Riordan will save customers money and help ensure a better world for future generations. Because Riordan is focused on sustainability, solar panels will be installed in every plant that will lower energy costs and help the environment. Every plant and parking lot of Riordan's will have LED lighting installed by the end of 2013. Initially, LED is more expensive, but maintenance cost is lower, the lifecycle is longer, and LED operates more efficiently than fluorescent lighting.
Riordan is implementing sustainable living recycling programs at each of their four plants that will include: using biodegradable plates and eating utensils made from corn starch, installing energy efficient motion sensor hand dryers in every restroom to reduce paper waste, and installing water-efficient fixtures. Riordan will use locally grown food products when possible, and a filtered water system to eliminate bottled water which will be a substantial energy saving project. Cleaning products will be eco-friendly,
