Main Point: What is Self injury?
1- I will explain what a self-injury is. Self-injury is defined as someone inflicts bodily harm in an attempt to alter his or her mood or state.
2- I will give examples of who cuts and the different reasons as to why they cut.
3- I will talk about my own experiences with cutting, Why I used to cut, how it made me feel after.
"In the general population of the US, estimates of individuals engaging in self injury range from 14 to 600 persons per 100,000 annually. The rates are higher in adolescents and young adults: estimates in the general college student population range from 1.8% to12%."
2nd Point: Signs and Symptoms
1- I will list some signs that someone might me a cutter. Such as wearing long sleeves in warm weather, having cuts or scratches, when asked about the cuts they give odd excuses.
A person who is cutting might have a difficulty handling anger, social withdrawal, and sensitivity to rejection.
2- I will talk about some of the excuses I used, and how they worked.
3rd Point: Treatment
1- I will talk about the different treatment facilities someone can go to for help.
If you think, someone might be hurting themselves here are some ways to help them.
Talk to the person; let them know that you are there for them. Professional help might be necessary in most cases depending on the severity of the problem. As a last resort there is the inpatient or outpatient treatment, the organization SAFE (Self Abuse Finally Ends) offers a 30 day in patient treatment.
