Dark colors encompass the canvas mirroring the trust that has been broken between Samson and his wife Delilah. The white shirt being stripped from the subjects body and shortened hair parallels God's covering and covenant with him being taken from him. The illustration shows the angels clothing whipping in the air as she flees when the covenant is broken and her protection is no longer needed. Guercino, shows the blindness of Samson in this event where the Philistines poke out his eyes by keeping his back to the audience and head down not being able to see his aggressors. Samson's back being painted broad and faced outward helps illustrate the power he encompassed. I chose this painting due to the power and betrayal this painting portrays. This painting shows a man's strength being stripped from him all because the trust he had for his loved one.
