Data Architecture
The current data environment does not provided an adequate state for the development of a new planned implementation of the reporting software. The current environment must be defined then the proposed end state of the data architecture. By providing structure to the data architecture the data resources can be managed effectively.
Data Access
The architecture for data access will utilize the N-Tier Architecture approach. The presentation tier will contain the user-interface, which will either be web-based or a fat-client. The data tier will process the requests that have been generated by the end-user or developer. The Business Tier will perform the business process of generating reports that have been initiated by the end-user.
Data Storage
The data will be stored within a database that will reside on a cluster server. This will allow for fail over and high availability. In the event of a failure of one server, the database will migrate over to the other server in the cluster. This will occur seamlessly to the end-user. Database backups will be performed by a pre-determined tape rotation schedule.
Data Types
The database will be a relational database, efficiently designed to avoid duplication and allowing data integrity to be maintained. The data housed within the database will contain financial information regarding the general ledger. Data types will be text and numeric.
Data Validation
Data validation will occur in the web-based or fat-client prior to any information being passed on to the other layers. Data will be generated in the form of reports by utilizing the reporting software wizards that minimize data input by the end-user and therefore reducing errors in report generation.
Data Security
Protection of the bank's financial data is very important. Maintaining accurate up-to-date information for regulatory reporting is vital to the financial operation of the bank. Database access will be granted only to end-users and developers that have responsibility for the financial reporting will have access for generating reports.
