I will show that the death penalty can not be justified for any crime no matter how terrible.
Capital punishment, or the death penalty, is the execution of a convicted criminal by the State as punishment for crimes known as capital crimes or capital offenses. The word "capital" is derived from the Latin "capitalis," which means "concerning the head"; therefore, to be subjected to capital punishment means to figuratively lose your head. (Wikipedia Ð'- Capital Punishment)
The death penalty is irreversible, "Since the death penalty was restored (in America) more than 90 death row inmates have been proved to be innocent and freed" (BBC website : Reporter Charles Wheeler). These people can not be brought back. Anything that involves even one such error is unacceptable. Where the death penalty is used, juries are often afraid to convict someone in case they are wrong; in this way, many criminals escape punishment (if the penalty was imprisonment, juries would be less afraid) Also people on death row often wait for decades for their execution and are reformed persons by the time of their execution.
Is death a real punishment? Are we not all going to die? The death penalty simply fast forwards a criminals life, once dead the criminal is no longer suffering or being punished. The family and friends of the criminal being executed will suffer emotionally long after the execution, while the criminal that has been executed is now dead and no longer suffering. The death penalty removes all chance of rehabilitation and redemption if we assume that no correctional treatment could mend a specific criminal then we must also assume that the criminal, prior to their offence was unable to mend themselves and therefore is being condemned for the way they were born or their circumstances'.
