Define the following terms: shin, MRI, cruciate ligament, meniscus, tendons and arthroscope.

Shin - The front area of the leg below the knee

MRI - Stands for magnetic resonance imaging, which is a medical examination that uses magnets and radio waves to create an image of the affected areas soft tissues and bones

Cruciate Ligament - A pair of ligaments located in the knee that cross each other and connect the femur to the timbula

Meniscus - Is a thin fibrous cartilage that is between the surfaces of some joints such as the knee

Tendons - Is a inelastic but flexible cord of strong fibrous collagen tissue that helps attach a muscle to a bone

Arthroscope - Is an object used to diagnose an injury or disease of a joint, it is also used to perform minor surgery on a joint as well

How does the anatomy of the knee differ from the anatomy of the elbow?

Even though the elbow and the knee are both considered synovial joints the knee is more complex than the elbow. This is due to the elbow having a gliding and hinge joint meanwhile the knee has a gliding and condyloid joint. Because the knee has a condyloid joint it has more support than the elbow. The knee also has a knee cap also known as a patella and the elbow does not.

How do the cruciate ligaments in the knee aid in maintaining stability of the joint?

The cruciate ligament in the knee aid in maintaining stability of the joint by helping both ligaments to stretch which helps prevent hypertension. When the knee is flexed is helps the ligaments prevent slipping movements of the tibia

Why does swelling occur in Emily’s left knee following the injury?

Following the injury Emily’s left knee begins to swell due to her having an injury which consist of a torn ligament in her knee.

Why was Emily kept in the hospital overnight for observation?

Emily is kept overnight at the hospital for observations because they had scheduled for her to have surgery to repair her knee the next day. As well as Emily might have had a concussion due to the fall and her taking some time to regain her composure.
