Diverse Atlantic World

In the dawn of the twenty first century, the Atlantic World is a diverse place. It is a region that has seen many events. Wars, revolution, slavery and culture are a small part of this regions storied past and why we study it. Several influences are contributed to the development of North and Latin America. British influence in the north paved the way to a society more powerful than any other in the history of the world. Spanish domination in the South America's gave rise to a new Spanish culture in the region. The French have left a lasting influence on many areas in Canada. The stretch of events leading from the sixteenth century to the present represents a time of stunning events leading us to study the magnificent rise of this newly discovered area.
There are several ways of interpreting the events of the past to incorporate them into the present. For example, the slave trade of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries marked the beginning of a whole new people and their culture coming to the America's. Bringing their culture and their traditions along with them, by force, slaves began to incorporate themselves into the American way of life. Today, one can go to the south in places like Louisiana and Mississippi and see the influence, such as their music, that the former slaves have in those places.
The Spanish created a vast colonial empire in the Caribbean
and South America. Spanish influence can be seen throughout this region. Language, architecture, and innovations are evident throughout the former Spanish colonies. French influence in the north provided French speaking enclaves in Canada as well as French names in America's, like New Orleans.
Many wars have been fought throughout this region as the colonial powers made attempts to gain more territory and control over the new world. Wars between the colonial powers of France, Britain and Spain became prominent throughout this time period to also shape the America's into what it is now.
To myself, the Atlantic World is a place where history must be evaluated and looked at carefully because of the stunning events throughout its time period. Analyzing the various events that have occurred in this region can not only give us a better idea of the sacrifices individuals made, but can also give us an insight on the mechanics of forming a new empire.
