There are two types of diversity that we have learned about this week, surface level diversity and deep level diversity. The difference between the two is that with surface level diversity, our differences and our similarities are what we can see on the outside. This means the color of our skin, our dialect, whether we are physically handicapped or not, etc. It is everything that we can see about someone. With deep level diversity, these are our similarities and differences that we cannot see. This would include our mood, our personality, mental handicaps, our heritage, our sexual orientation, political views, etc. It is everything that we cannot see about someone.
While looking at me, some things that people would be able to identify as surface level would be that I am pretty healthy, I do not have an accent, I have no disabilities, my hair is thinning (unfortunately), I tan, so I have a darker complexion, and I am a Caucasian male. Some of these factors that get pointed out with me is that I get compliments from tanning and that it looks good on me and makes my eyes stand out. Another thing that is mentioned, mainly by friends through joking, is my thinning hair. In general though, I do not think that any of these factors make a difference when people, whether I know them or not, view me. I would like to think that I look pretty normal or at least normal from a societal definition of the word.
With deep level diversity, something that people would not know about me just from looking at me is my personality. I tend to be pretty out going, definitely extraverted and I like being around people. Another thing they would not know is that I tend to align myself with more conservative and right thinking political view. I am probably more moderate, however I tend to lean to the right. From looking at me, someone would not know that I mostly come from Irish decent. I do not have the stereotypical Irish look of pale skin and red hair. My brother has that. I have blonde hair, blue eyes, and if in the sun, I will tan and have a very dark complexion. Something else that most people would not know about me is my sexual orientation. I am homosexual, however I do not really have any of the stereotypical homosexual tendencies (if that's what we want to call it). For example, I am what is considered "straight-acting" which corresponds to how I carry myself, dress, talk, etc. So from looking at me, someone would not be able to pin point my sexual orientation. In fact, most people are shocked when they find out.
My scores from the Big 5 personality test were: O - 20, C - 83, E - 89, A - 63, and N - 32. I agree with the scores and explanations given. I think that is me almost to a T. While watching the video from the module, I pretty much knew how I was going to score before I even took the test. I was not surprised at all.
In five years, I would like to have a job where I am an executive within a Fortune 500 company, Fortune 100 if possible, in a role where I get to help people. I like to solve problems and help people receive the complete solution for their particular situation based on their wants and needs. Anytime I am able to do that, I feel a personal accomplishment has been achieved and I receive a personal satisfaction. Any job where I have been able to do that has not felt like a job to me and I love going to work. I think helping people with their needs is a calling for me in life. Factors that would be important to be successful in a role such as this is my openness,
