At its most powerful, music transcends barriers, uniting people who on the surface may seem to have little in common. Such is the case with DJ Calypso, a Belgrade based commercial dance/trance DJ whose partners, despite being from very different backgrounds, have a musical and spiritual bond beyond measure. In his songs you can hear the power of dedication to crowd, a lush, emotionally intense and beautiful happy dance/trance melodies that goes much further than skin deep in exploring timeless and universal themes of love, strife, loss and determination in the face of all life delivers.

Stefan Simonovic (DJ Calypso) grew up in Belgrade, Serbia, a product of a stable family and the good things in life.

Music provided both inspiration and salvation for Stefan. For him, his idols were from many different genres: Scooter, 50 cent, Abba, Billy Idol, Depeche Mode, Elvis Crespo, Enya, Kiss, Prodigy, U2, “I was seven, and it just seemed like the coolest thing in the world. Then when I was nine, I started to produce my own tracks. Scooter definitely inspired me to start so. By the time I was fifteen, I could play self-produced tracks which was rare in Serbia.”

Stefan’s first four years of producing were binded to not so commercial electro/house/hip hop sound. But they also produced about seventy songs, and an increasing confidence in himself. “I worked under the name ’Jilo’ for quite a while,” says Stefan, “But I pulled the plug on that and then recorded remixes of The Way I Are, Everytime We Touch, Glamorous, and my most commercial track – It Is A Dream. It’s titled It Is A Dream because of my friend who helped me to write the best lyrics I could ever imagine!’’

DJ Calypso’s tracks are infused with a strong sense of happiness, but there are also some dark elements. Stefan explains, “My music is about internal conflict and the feelings within everyone; love, happiness, loss and sadness. I do run on the darker side of emotional living; my thoughts go to longing, pain and sadness. But there’s always room for a way out and for celebration, and those elements of happiness are punctuated.” That may seem contradictory, but it’s undeniably human, and you can hear it in song like “Hear Me Calling,”
