Django Unchained
Django Unchained is a Spaghetti Western movie that is compiled of adventure, drama, action and love. It is directed by Quentin Tarantino. It is controversial historical movie set somewhere in Texas around 1858, two years before the Civil War. The movie plot and the selection of the actors made this movie a success. I would definitely recommend this movie to a college audience. This movie reminds me of Mandingo. Django Unchained shows how slaves were treated during the Pre- Civil War period in the southern part of the United States. There is a scene in this movie where a young woman slave is tied to a tree and beaten. A similar scene was in Mandingo. Django Unchained is a remake of the original movie, directed by Sergio Corbucci in 1966 and starred Franco Nero as Django. In the first movie Django, Franco Nero was searching for the man who murdered his wife. He was not a slave, just an angry white man out for revenge. He killed anyone that stood in his way. The new version, Django Unchained has a much better plot and several reasons for Django and Dr. Schultz search.
The main characters, Django (Jamie Foxx), Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz), Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Steven (Samuel L. Jackson) were superbly chosen. All of these characters called for strong vibrant personalities and that is exactly what each one delivered. Django main purpose is to reunite with his wife. He displayed courage and determination. The bounty hunter, Dr. Shultz is an uplifting character among so much misery and violence. Broomhilda was brilliantly portrayed as a strong black slave displaying lots of courage and suffering. Candyland plantation owner, Calvin Candie who is supposed to be French, but cannot speak any French at all and probably has never been to France is ruthless. He is a coward and a bully who cares for no one but himself, not even his sister. Steven, the head house servant at Candyland is a sorry, pathetic excuse for a man who cares more for his White owner than his own people. I disliked his character most of all.
The movie shows how badly slaves were mistreated. In it a dentist turned bounty- hunter and a freed slave search for fugitives and Django wife, Broomhilda. Broomhilda and Django were separated and sold at an auction for trying to escape. Broomhilda was sold to the ruthless owner of the Candyland Plantation, Calvin Candie. Django main purpose
